The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
