Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio
The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or imploding.
Matteo's Surprising Presence
A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
