The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
